This is another post I had written just after IPL 2010. Read on..
Everyone associates Steve Jobs with apple and its creations like iPhone and iPod. But, his contributions to the human kind is much more important. He was responsible for such wonderful movies like Finding Nemo, Toy story, cars, Up!, ratatouille…the list goes on and on… let me explain. In a book called Mavericks at work written by William C.Taylor, I first read about Pixar, the company I already loved because of the films I mentioned above.Pixar Animation Studios started as a branch of Lucas films( of the star wars or was it star trek? fame). These guys did the special effects for all the Lucas films. When George Lucas was in financial trouble, he looked to sell special effects team and Steve Jobs was there to grab them up.Initially, they did not have a business model. They had developed a wonderful software that was able to make animation that was eons ahead of what other companies were able to achieve. They started out by selling a computer with this software pre-loaded(remember, Steve Jobs is a hardware man). When this did not work out, they started doing special effects for advertisements and stuff. Then John Lesseter hit upon an idea that changed the face of cartoon movie making. He thought up of a full-feature length animation movie and hence came up with Toy Story. The difference between toy story and older cartoon movies like Lion king is that Toy story is completely computer animated. Lion king was hand drawn, frame by frame…With the help of their fantastic software which made the characters look 3-D , they were able to rope in Disney to market and distribute it. The rest as they say is history. Till date they have released 10 movies each one a bigger hit than the previous one. In fact, let me see if I can name all of them, oh, by the way, if you havent watched some of them, then you are really missing something – Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Cars, Ratatouille, wall.e and Up!… hmm.. I can’t seem to get all the movies… Do tell me which ones I have missed…Anyway, the book says, the difference between this company and the other studios in the business is that, these guys take movie making in a totally different manner. Usual studios make movies on a project basis, i.e someone gets hold of a good script, then they choose a director to direct it. Then a few actors, costume designers, set designers etc. They all work together for about a year, or in some cases like avatar a decade and once the movie is done, the team breaks up.Pixar does things differently. Every part of the movie is done by an employee. They do not hire people on a project basis though they do hire consultants. The result, John Lesseter has directed 4 movies, Bird directed the next three and they each worked with the same set of brilliant animation artists. And with each movie they got better as they learnt something new, they shared it with others in the next movie. This ties in with what Judith( CDC Software’s Agile evangelist) has been saying about a team forming, storming, norming and finally performing. I think Pixar has been performing since a long long time. The people working in Pixar are highly coveted animation artists, but the atmosphere at Pixar is such that everyone stuck on for a lower pay ( compared to project based contracts).Pixar also had a motto, never do a sequel unless it is better than the original. The only time they did a sequel was toy story 2 , as they were under contract from Disney to make a sequel. However, some years back, Steve Jobs sold Pixar to Disney. The terms included the continuity of the name “Pixar” if the original team was involved in a movie. However, I do feel, it is an end of the era for Pixar. Steve Jobs might have nurtured the company for more than 15 years, but in the end, by selling it to a company like Disney, has killed a legend.Steve Jobs made lots of money and now is the largest individual shareholder of Disney. I got the proof that the legend is dead recently when I saw that Disney is going to release “Cars 2” and “Toy Story 3”. Disney is back to old habits of milking its cash cows( remember lion king 3?) instead of creating something new…Another maverick whose end has come is Lalit Modi. In spite of what others think, I believe he was a fantastic manager, on top of all the crises that IPL encountered. He turned his idea into a cash cow for BCCI. He made sure IPL 2 happened, by shifting it to South Africa in about one month’s time. He did not hesitate to shift semi-finals from Bangalore to Mumbai. All to ensure that show goes on.I am sure that with him gone, IPL tournaments in the future will be like any other publicly held event, ill-managed, ill-conceived with fixed plans that cannot react to Bangalore bomb-like incidents.Yes, I am sad that Pixar is dead… am gonna try cheering up by watching finding Nemo again…for the 14th time…
Several things have changed since then, Toy Story 3 did get released, but I also found that John Lesseter was involved in the making of another animated movie Bolt. This movie was not branded as Pixar studios, so Disney realised John’s brilliance and gave him a much wider role in the running of Disney. So, there is still hope…
